Lots of botrytis, concentrating the stone fruit, malt, vanilla and apricot in a luscious sticky. 96/100 Food – Blue Castello cheese.”

The bouquet is very Chenin Blanc showing gentle aromas of apple, stonefruit and floral. Its concentrated and lively on the palate showing fine texture, subtle sweetness (13g/l) and bright acidity. The balance between the natural residual sugar and the acid is sublime. The wine is beautifully proportioned and harmonized. Cchenin Blanc is almost a forgotten variety in New Zealand but this is definitely worth hunting it down. It is delicious drinking now and may well age beautifully over the next 10 years. At its best: now to 2016. |

Review in Landscapes Nov/Dec 2007 Joelle Thomson – “Named after Marlborough winemaker John Forrest’s grandfather, this new top notch Marlborough wine casts a new light on Sauvignon Blanc. Crisp, fresh and minerally.”
Wine Orbit - “This is one of those non-popular Sauvignon styles. But it’s excellent, outstanding in fact. A wine for those who enjoy Sancerres, young Clare Valley Rieslings or Hunter Semillons. The acidity is severe yet attractive. The wine has the classic gooseberries and herbal notes with mineral complexity. The front palate shows sweet, ripe fruit then the lemony acidity kicks in and goes right through the palate to the end where it lingers on for so long. A serious Sauvignon Blanc for grown ups. At its best: now to 2010.” – 5 stars – Score 94

Geoff Kelly wine reviews - "Pale lemonstraw. Bouquet is exotic in the extreme, perfumed beyond rosewater and Turkish delight, almost hairdresser-scented. I am giving it the benefit of the doubt, hoping more explicit wild-ginger blossom aromas will develop, as it settles down from extreme youth. Palate is similarly perfumed, almost lemon-balm notes (not necessarily appealing in wine), but also with fragrant lychee and apricot suggestions, in elegant varietal fruit. It is not a big or very sweet wine, I don't think there is much botrytis complexity, but in two years it should be much more together and compelling than it is now. Cellar 5 – 10 years. Classic “ Kiwi” Riesling with an attractive nose of green apple, citrus fruits, lemon blossom and just a hint of Manuka honey; its delicate, crisp and finely balanced with a splash of residual fruit sweetness. Our 2009 is without doubt the best ever example of this style we have achieved – intense, concentrated and harmonious wine with tort acidity and a long minerally finish. A great each way bet to enjoy now youthful, zesty and fruity or cellared for greater complexity and later enjoyment. |

Huon Hooke - Wine of the week in Sydney Morning Herald Nov 08
From one of New Zealand's finest producers, this is about as good as Marlborough sauvignon blanc gets. They haven't messed around with oak or malolactic or other technical frills; this is the pure sauvignon blanc flavour the world has come to know and love. There are some confectionery and faintly yeasty aromas over kiwi fruit, gooseberry and lightly tropical aromas, while in the mouth it has more depth and concentration than most. It's crisp and alive; juicy and well balanced, with delicious texture and mouth-feel. Fine, fragrant and invigorating. Drink young.
Ralph Kyte-Powell, Delicious Magazine
"Dr. John Forrest is one of New Zealand’s most knowledgeable Sauvignon Blanc makers, and it shows. A perfect partner for summer dishes with Thai inspiration, this has passionfruit, citrus and blackcurrant notes with some steely power. It tastes more complex than most, and finishes with mouth-watering zip." |

Wine Orbit, Sam Kim – 4.5 stars/ 90 points - This wine shows classic Marlborough sauvignon flavours with relative restraint rather than aggressive pungency. The nose os youthful and fragrant displaying passionfruit, green apples and subtle herbaceous characters. It’s full and vibrant on the palate showing good fruit weight and mouthwatering acidity. The finish is brilliantly clean and refreshing. At it’s best: now to 2012. |

It’s easy to imagine the smell of raindrops on hot river pebbles when you sniff this lively example of Dr John Forrest’s skills. Grilled capsicum aromas sit in the background. It boasts lashings of rich fruit on the palate, with a savoury edge for extra complexity. Partner it with a brace of Marlborough Sounds mussels, either steamed open and served as they are, or topped with slivered fennel, olive oil and Japanese panko (crunchy breadcrumbs) before being grilled. - Vic Williams 2010

Marlborough Express Review 22/10/2009
Big and boisterous, with all the bells and whistles – a prickly mix of passionfruit, blackcurrant and some sweaty, capsicum and citrus notes. A vibrant and punchy wine front of palate; there's some citrus zest and ripe fruitiness teamed up with crisp acids. This savvy is refreshing right through to the finish but the flavours do fall away rapidly. What we have here is a light, easy-drinking wine suited to lunches, picnics and other summertime pursuits.
Jo Burzynska—VIVA Review 14/10/2009
With his latest innovation, Forrest has managed to make a 9.5 per cent wine that expresses plenty of attractive Sauvignon flavour in its light citrusy palate laced with herb, fennel and blackcurrant.
Chairman Smith—Otago Daily Times Review 21/10/2009
At 9.5% alc (compared with the more usual 12-14%) this is ideal for lunch - you can have a whole glass and still go back to work! It's light but has a nice intensity, with a hint of mineral and an underlying delicacy. Good with food.

Forrest The Doctors' Marlborough Arneis 2009 (sc) Very pale straw in colour. Perfumed, floral on the nose and a little pinot gris-like in the palate with spiced apple and pear, but perhaps more body and richness and just a touch of sweetness with well-balanced underlying acidity and a bright orange juice / orange zest zing. Wine of the year 2009: Forrest The Doctors Riesling 09, Marlborough – So what if it only came runner up in the values category? 09 being a year of recession it only fits that my favourite wine of the year is affordable and immediately drinkable. Geoff Kelly Wine Reviews - 17 ½ ”Ruby, some carmine and velvet. This wine opens a little veiled by trace pure H2S – all it needs is a brisk pouring from jug to jug five times. Transformed. It becomes aromatic cassis dominating slightly charry oak, all looking good. Palate is exactly the same, with good berry. This is another wine with a lot of Bordeaux styling to it, though not exactly reflecting its cabernet dominance, being softer than expected. Since it is under screwcap though, the reductive note is a worry. Cellar 5 – 20 years. GK 09/07”

Geoff Kelly Wine Reviews –
Dessert: 2005 John Forrest Noble Riesling Forrest Collection ($50 per half) 19 points.
As New Zealand wine has become more and more international in character and capability, richer sweet courses have remained the food class where it has been hard to find a local wine that really measures up. Many of the rieslings have been too light and total acid too high for food comfort. Latterly with the move towards sauternes styles in Hawkes Bay, fruit ripeness has sometimes been less than perfect, with just a little mean green thread inappropriate to the lusciousness and balance desired. Or sometimes the wines are over-developed and the oak is too assertive to complement food. And throughout the class, VAs have often been too high to sit happily with food.
What a pleasure it is to record therefore, that even against a near-impossible traditional olde English Christmas pudding more suited to an old sweet fortified wine such as madeira, this remarkable Forrest Collection Noble Riesling is of sufficient substance, complexity and botrytis purity to be magical. Apart from its perfect ripeness and purity, the wine's key feature is the dry extract and body, additional to the sweetness at 220 grams per litre. Food purists might argue that it is still too light for this assignment, but I thought it worked because of the body, and it refreshed the nose and palate beautifully. Also the subtlety of the oak component (if any) allowed the almonds in the pudding – a key feature – to show through delightfully. This Collection Noble Riesling is again one of the greatest sweet wines ever made in New Zealand. It will cellar for a decade at least, and maybe much longer.
“Very intense sweet wine with honey, vanilla, citrus and mineral flavours. It treads a fine and successful line between botrytis influence and varietal character - both are very evident. ” Bob Campbell, February 2008, 93 Points, 5 Stars |
